Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to visit Italy for talks with government officials and Pope Francis.
The trip, which has not been officially confirmed for security reasons, is expected to include separate meetings with President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni before heading to the Vatican.
Zelenskyy previously met with the pope in 2020 and has had several phone conversations with him since the war with Russia began.
The pope has tried to act as a mediator in the conflict, condemning Russia’s actions and offering to broker peace talks.
Zelenskyy’s 10-point peace plan calls for the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the withdrawal of Russian troops, among other measures.
The pope has also expressed a willingness to help repatriate Ukrainian children who have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea.
