Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has claimed that his family members conspired against him by voting for Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the 25 February presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm programme, the governor stated that he did not give any chance to the Labour Party to win in his state, and that he was surprised to see the party win some votes.
He attributed the votes to a protest against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), rather than support for Obi.
Umahi expressed shock that both President Muhammadu Buhari and the president-elect lost their states to the opposition parties in the February 25 polls.
He believes that the votes obtained by the Labour Party were due to Nigeria’s hardship and challenges, rather than support for the party’s candidate.
“In all honesty, I didn’t give any chance to the Labour Party to win any election in my State (Ebonyi State) because what we have put in place was such that no other political party should be able to win anything, not even Councilorship election in my State,” Umahi said.
He went on to say that he was surprised to learn that his family members voted for Obi.
However, he believes that their decision was not a vote for the candidate himself, but rather a protest against the current political climate. “It was not a vote for His Excellency Peter Obi. As such, there is seemingly hardship and challenges in Nigeria,” he said.
