Umar Sani, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on Nyesom Wike to step aside and allow the party to recover from its internal struggles. NaijNaira News learnt Sani accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of being at the center of the party’s recurring crises.
Wike recently withdrew from a peace committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, citing a breakdown in trust with Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed over unfulfilled agreements. His decision comes just days before the PDP’s critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27.
In a strongly-worded statement on Sunday, Sani criticized Wike’s claims of personal sacrifice for the PDP. He argued that Wike’s rise through the ranks — from local government chairman to two-term governor — was entirely due to the party’s platform.
“Wike’s narrative that he has sacrificed so much for the PDP is both misleading and self-glorifying. The truth is: that the PDP made Wike,” Sani said.
He accused Wike of undermining the party’s leadership for years. From backing and later turning against successive national chairmen — including Ali Modu Sheriff, Ahmed Makarfi, Uche Secondus, and Iyorchia Ayu — to aligning with President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Wike’s actions, Sani claimed, have been fueled by ego and personal ambition.
The former spokesman of the PDP presidential campaign council in 2019 further alleged that Wike’s recent orchestration of the sealing of the PDP National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza was a strategic move to block the NEC meeting and disrupt internal processes.
Sani stated that Wike has betrayed several key party figures over the years, from Jimi Agbaje to Prof. Tunde Adeniran, often making promises of support only to backtrack at crucial moments.
He concluded by urging Wike to resign if he can no longer support the PDP’s collective direction.
“The PDP must reclaim its breath. And to do so, Wike must let go and let the PDP breathe,” Sani declared.
