Van Dijk Responds to Owen After Liverpool Derby Win

Virgil van Dijk isn’t having it when it comes to Michael Owen’s take on Liverpool’s season.

After Liverpool’s gritty 1-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside Derby, Owen expressed that the team’s early exits from the Carabao Cup and the Champions League could leave a “bitter taste” if they win the Premier League title.

Van Dijk, however, wasn’t having any of it. “So you’re suggesting the season is not going to be special anymore?” he responded.

Owen agreed the season could still be special, but Van Dijk wasn’t done. “I think we have to change that narrative a little bit… it’s still looking very special in my eyes,” he said.

According to Mirror Football, Van Dijk reminded everyone that few expected Liverpool to challenge on four fronts this season, yet they’re still very much in the running for the biggest prize of them all.

Meanwhile, ahead of Liverpool’s next game against Fulham, manager Arne Slot gave an update on the injury front.

Conor Bradley, who’s been sidelined with injury, might be in line to replace Curtis Jones at right-back. As for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, both are expected to remain out for a few more weeks.

Slot praised Curtis Jones for stepping up during the Merseyside Derby, and even praised Jarell Quansah’s performance. He added that goalkeeper Alisson is likely to return against Fulham after missing the derby due to a concussion.

Everton defender James Tarkowski has also come forward with an apology for his high tackle on Alexis Mac Allister in the derby. Tarkowski admitted, “I spoke to him and I apologised because it’s not a great tackle.” He explained that the challenge came when he expected a “big old-school 50-50” but ended up catching Mac Allister high instead.
