Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hinted at a possible departure from the club following an emotional end to the season.
The 33-year-old defender is currently under contract for just one more year at Merseyside.
With Arne Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp as the new coach, van Dijk’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain.
Speaking after the Netherlands’ defeat to England in the Euros, van Dijk opened up about his doubts regarding his future at both club and international levels.
He said, “I haven’t the slightest idea right now. I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this. After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”
Earlier this year, van Dijk expressed his desire to be part of Liverpool’s transition in the post-Klopp era.
Despite the speculation, it would be surprising to see him leave the club before his contract expires.
However, international retirement may be on the horizon for the seasoned player.
