Results for the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) have been released on Monday, just 45 days after the end of the examination on June 23, 2022.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, the West African Examinations Council WAEC’s Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, disclosed that a total of 1,607,981 candidates registered for the examination from 20,222 recognised secondary schools in the country, saying 1,601,047 candidates sat the examination.
The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2021, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 81.70%. Thus, there is a 5.34% decrease in performance in this regard.
Besides, the HNO disclosed that the marking of the scripts held in 89 venues across the country from June 11 to July 29, 2022, comprised 85 traditional and four e-marking venues throughout the country, saying 79,229 examiners participated in the coordination and marking exercise.
Mr. Areghan said the results of 365,564 candidates, representing 22.83%, of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice, saying the figure represents 11.74% higher than the 10.9% recorded in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2021.
The HNO warned 10 debtor states not to expect the release of the results of the candidates they sponsored for the examination unless they demonstrate serious commitments.
