The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the first series of its 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.
The exam was held between January 31 and February 17, 2023, and was marked at three venues in Ibadan, Enugu, and Abuja from March 8 to March 23, 2023.
A total of 8,738 candidates entered for the exam, representing a 16% increase from the previous year, with 8,348 candidates sitting the exam at 262 centers across the country.
Of the candidates, 27 had special needs, including visual impairment, hearing impairment, and albinism.
The results of 8,253 candidates, representing 98.87%, have been fully processed and released, while 95 candidates, representing 1.13%, have a few subjects still being processed due to errors on their part.
Out of the 8,348 candidates, 2,960 candidates (35.46%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, while 2,003 candidates (23.99%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The percentage of candidates in this category decreased marginally by 2.33% compared to the previous year.
The results of 413 candidates (4.95%) have been withheld due to reported cases of examination malpractice, and the cases are being investigated.
