Throughout the January transfer window, Nigeria football players were involved in various deals around Europe.
In the English Premier League alone, Chelsea went on a massive spending spree and broke the British transfer record by signing Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
Other teams such as Southampton also made several moves to try and stay up in the Premier League.
Unfortunately, Nigerian players didn’t make a lot of headlines this winter transfer window but there were some notable ones.
Here are NAIJNAIRA’S top five picks of Nigerian players’ moves during the January Transfer Window.
Terrem Moffi: Lorient – OGC Nice
Terrem Moffi, the Nigerian international and Super Eagles striker is continuing his career in France’s Ligue 1 with OGC Nice. Moffi initially moved to France from KV Kortrijk in 2020 and has since scored 34 goals in 87 matches.
It was announced that his transfer between Lorient and Nice would be a mandatory paid loan of €2.5 million with a €22.5 million (plus an additional €5 million bonus) obligation to buy him permanently. It is expected that he make his debut appearance for OGC Nice against Marseille on Sunday, 5 February 2021.
Paul Onuachu: Racing Genk – Southampton
Paul Onuachu made Nigerian football history on deadline day with his move to the English Premier League, transferring from RKC Genk in Belgium to Southampton. The towering striker will undoubtedly look to emulate the successes of former Nigerian greats like Efan Ekoku, Kanu Nwankwo and Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who have set high standards for playing in the EPL.
With Southampton at risk of relegation halfway through the season, expectations will be high for Onuachu’s first game which is likely to be against Brentford this weekend. Luckily for him, he will have a friendly face in Joe Aribo at Southampton to help him settle quickly into his new club and league.
Ebenezer Akinsanmiro: Remo Stars – Inter Milan
Nigerian youngster Ebenezer Akinsanmiro recently completed an impressive move to Italian side Inter Milan, from Nigeria Professional Football League team Remo Stars. He signed a four-year deal with the Serie A giants. Prior to this, Akinsamiro had helped Remo Stars gain promotion from the Nigeria National League; he also featured in their 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League campaign.
Beyond that, he had been part of the Academy team for The Creative Championship and Viareggio Cup World Football Tournament. As Akinsamiro looks set to make his mark in Italian football like fellow Nigerians Obafemi Martins and Pastor Taribo West, we wish him all the best!
Tolu Arokodare: Amiens – Racing Genk
Genk have added another tall Nigerian striker to their roster, with the signing of Tolu Arokodare from French Ligue 2 club Amiens on a four-and-a-half-year deal. Arokodare has shown impressive form since his days with Flying Sports Academy and Box2Box FC in his native Nigeria, hitting an impressive 43 goals for his previous clubs.
KRC Genk’s Head of Football, Dimitri De Condé had high praise for the new striker saying “Despite his height, he is very agile, fast in the first meters, and strong with his head” which gives optimism that he will be able to build upon his already impressive tally.
William Troost-Ekong: Watford – Salernitana
William Troost-Ekong has returned to the Italian Serie A after signing on loan with Salernitana from Watford until the end of the season. This marks his comeback to Italy two years and four months after departing Udinese for Vicarage Road.
As part of the deal, Salernitana will pay Watford a loan fee as well as an additional fee should they manage to remain in top-flight football following the 2022-2023 season. The Gambian’s presence at Salernitana was confirmed in grand style when he made a victorious debut against Lecce which put the team closer to their main purpose of obtaining high-level status by the season’s end.
