Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has cautioned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that its internal divisions and self-interest could derail its chances in the 2027 general elections.
According to Vanguard Nigeria, Wike made these remarks during a media chat in Abuja on Monday, May 12, where he expressed frustration over the exclusion of key party members and the PDP’s failure to properly manage recent defections.
He referenced the move by former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a smart political decision. Wike criticized the PDP’s leadership for acting surprised by Okowa’s defection, saying they ignored warning signs and advice from within.
“You have not won an election, but you are excluding people. You want to play the same game you played in 2023; it will backfire,” Wike said.
The minister also condemned the party’s focus on internal rivalries, especially what he described as an obsession with his role in the current APC-led government. He pointed out that the PDP should focus on building unity rather than alienating its own.
Recent developments, including the defection of 27 PDP lawmakers in Rivers State to the APC, have added to the tension. The party has since asked those lawmakers to vacate their seats and called on INEC to conduct fresh elections.
Wike insisted that without real leadership and inclusion, the PDP risks another electoral failure. His statements suggest growing frustration among party loyalists and signal potential shifts ahead of 2027.
