A 76-year-old woman from Ecuador, Bella Montoya, who was declared dead by local doctors after suffering from a cardiac and respiratory arrest, shocked mourners at her funeral when she started gasping for air and hitting on the inside of her coffin.
The country’s Ministry of Health confirmed her death and issued a death certificate, but an investigation has been launched to determine responsibility for the false certificate.
A video posted on social media showed Montoya lying in her open casket, gasping for breath.
She is currently on life support at a hospital in Babahoyo, Ecuador.
Her son, Gilberto Barbera, stated that his mother had been admitted to the hospital and was pronounced dead by a doctor, but later clarified that she was on artificial respiration and her heart was stable.
During the funeral, after about five hours of the wake, the coffin started to make sounds, and Montoya was seen breathing heavily and hitting the coffin.
Her condition remains serious at the moment.
