The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations came to a thrilling conclusion as hosts Cote d’Ivoire emerged victorious, defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 in the final.

Franck Kessie’s near-post finish and Sebastien Haller’s flick secured the trophy for the Ivorians in a memorable match at Stade Alassane Quattara in Abidjan.

Although Nigeria fell short of lifting the trophy, several individual players showcased their talent throughout the tournament.

One standout performer was defender William Troost-Ekong, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player.

His commanding presence, composed leadership, and crucial tackles were instrumental in guiding the Super Eagles to the final.

Additionally, Ekong’s three goals contributed significantly to the team’s success.

South Africa’s Ronwen Williams was recognized as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, beating Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali for the award.

Williams impressed with his agility, reflexes, and game-changing saves. His penalty shoot-out heroics against Cape Verde and Congo DR further highlighted his exceptional performance.

Equatorial Guinea’s Esue claimed the Highest Goal Scorer accolade, showcasing his prowess in front of the net.

Despite falling short of their ultimate goal, the Super Eagles can take pride in individual achievements such as Ekong’s MVP award and the team’s impressive run to the final.

With the Africa Cup of Nations now behind them, the focus shifts to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Nigeria will aim to continue their success on the international stage.
