Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has declared that no one can become Nigeria’s president without the backing of the North. He emphasized that the region is politically aware and ready to decide its next course ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Guardian Nigeria, Baba-Ahmed urged Northerners to unite and be cautious of individuals he referred to as “traitor politicians” who aim to divide the region. He also recalled the violent attacks on churches and mosques during Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign, warning against attempts to destabilize Northern unity.
He stated, “It’s left for the rest of Nigerians to follow us, or we go alone. We know nobody will become President without the North.” Baba-Ahmed pointed out that the North is preparing to announce its political direction within six months.
Meanwhile, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, had dismissed the chances of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 race during an appearance on Arise Television. He claimed Tinubu should not waste time contesting again.
In response, the Presidency criticized Yusuf Baba-Ahmed’s comments. Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, described them as baseless and unreasonable.
He added that President Tinubu has shown capacity in his first two years, saying performance—not theories—will shape 2027’s outcome. “In 2027, Baba-Ahmed and others will need all the marines available to defeat Tinubu,” Dare remarked.
As political tensions rise, Northern unity and influence remain a key issue ahead of the next general elections.
