A 29-year-old man from Liverpool, Jonathan Edge has recently been sentenced to three years and four months in prison for operating an illegal streaming service dubbed a “firestick” business.
Jonathan pleaded guilty to three offences under the Fraud Act, following a major crackdown led by the Premier League, Merseyside Police, and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT).
Edge was found guilty of illegally loading data onto Firestick devices and selling them to customers who could then access pirated TV content, including live sports.
He advertised his services on Facebook and via word of mouth, operating the business from his home.
The Premier League has been actively targeting illegal streaming, which costs the industry millions of pounds each year.
Detective Sergeant Steve Frame from Merseyside Police emphasized the seriousness of intellectual property theft, stating that many people mistakenly think there is no harm in illegal streaming, but the law takes these offences seriously.
The case serves as a warning to others involved in piracy, with Premier League General Counsel Kevin Plumb reinforcing the league’s commitment to protecting its broadcast rights.
He also highlighted that the legal action taken against individuals like Edge helps safeguard the Premier League’s financial contributions to the football pyramid.
