Manchester City Football Club may have to rely on five other Premier League teams in order to avoid being expelled from the English top flight after being accused of breaching multiple financial regulations.
It was back in 2018 when leaked emails from Der Spiegel brought about the investigation into City’s finances, and while the side were victorious at getting a two-year UEFA ban overturned, as well as a fine reduced to £9million for failing to cooperate, they will face more dire consequences if they are found guilty by the Commission that oversaw this newest enquiry.
The Commission has many tools at its disposal – including suspending City from playing matches in any league or competition and deducting them points earned or yet-to-be-earned – but most damaging of all would be expulsion from membership.
If it does come to this, then all Premier League clubs will be called for a special resolution meeting and it is here that Manchester City need five members out of a possible twenty to vote in their favour in order to stay in the league.
Expulsion of a team has never happened before and, likewise, neither has an instance occurred where a team were fined €40 million – like QPR were – only then to get it reduced due to an appeal.
Portsmouth were instead handed only three points deducted back in 2009/10 after they went into administration.
