In a surprising turn of events, Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis legend, was defeated by 22-year-old Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2024.

This loss marked the end of Djokovic’s impressive 33-match winning streak at Melbourne Park since 2018. Sinner’s victory propelled him into the final of the tournament, while Djokovic fell short of his quest for an 11th title and a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam crown.

The match saw Sinner dominate the first two sets, winning 6-2 and 6-2. Djokovic, known for his resilience, managed to win the third set in a tight 7-6 battle.

However, Sinner regained his momentum and closed out the match with a 6-3 victory in the final set. This win made Sinner the first Italian player to reach the finals at the Australian Open.

Sinner’s triumph over Djokovic was not his first, as he had previously defeated the Serbian superstar in the ATP Finals group stage and at the Davis Cup.

When asked about his success against Djokovic, Sinner jokingly replied, “I don’t know. Ask him!”

Djokovic’s loss came after the exit of second seed Carlos Alcaraz, who was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. Djokovic, the top seed in the tournament, had missed the Australian Open in 2022 due to his Covid vaccination status.

On the other hand, Sinner has yet to drop a set in the tournament, displaying his exceptional form.

In the other semi-final, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will compete for a spot in the final. Medvedev, a strong contender in Melbourne, has reached the final in 2021 and 2022 but fell short to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, respectively.

With a chance to claim the world number two spot, Medvedev aims to clinch the title this time.
