OPay has warned customers against a fake notice circulating online that asks users to withdraw their funds ahead of an alleged suspension of the fintech’s services from September 1, 2026.
The message appeared on X under the account GeneralShow as an “Official Note from Opay Digital Services Limited”. It claimed that OPay would go on a “long indefinite break” from September 1 and would stop handling transactions and account-related services until further notice.
The notice then instructed customers to remove their funds from their OPay accounts “as soon as possible”, making the withdrawal of customer funds a central part of the fabricated announcement.
However, the message contains several inconsistencies that OPay identified as signs of a fake communication. The company pointed to an incorrect logo, spelling errors, an unfamiliar communication template and other red flags in the post.
“This is FALSE! OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company said in a statement shared through its verified channels. OPay also urged customers to examine the viral post carefully before accepting it as an official announcement.
Maxwell Loko, OPay’s Vice-President of Public and Government Affairs, separately described the publication as “false, malicious and misleading”. He cautioned customers against withdrawing or transferring their funds because of the fabricated message.
Loko also warned that deliberately spreading false information capable of causing panic or eroding confidence in a financial institution could attract legal consequences.
OPay’s existing security guidance also tells customers to watch for fraudulent messages and websites that imitate legitimate organisations. The company directs customers to its in-app customer service centre, official social media accounts and listed customer service numbers when seeking assistance.
The fintech has therefore asked customers to disregard the circulating notice and rely on its official channels for information about its services.
