Senator Ike Ekweremadu, an erstwhile Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, alongside his wife and doctor have been convicted by a UK court in a historic verdict under the Modern Slavery Act.
After six weeks of trial Ike, his wife, and his doctor were found guilty of facilitating a 21-year old man’s travel to the UK in an exploitation move.
Hugh Davies KC, the prosecutor, accused Senator Ikweremadu of entering a ‘commercially cold transaction’ with the man.
Davies also added that the politician’s love for his daughter is an unacceptable excuse for his actions.
Senator Ikweremadu, however, denied knowledge of the incident, alleging that he was defrauded.
His wife, Beatrice, denied knowledge of the events.
Meanwhile, the doctor denied that Ikweremadu intended to reward the man for giving his kidney, claiming that he accepted to donate his kidney out of altruism.
The judge at the Old Bailey Court, Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson, will pass a sentence on the trio later.
