Despite a goalless draw with Real Betis, a match of little consequence with Real already confirmed as La Liga champions and European qualification settled, the focus of the evening was honoring the 34-year-old midfielder.
Kroos, having made 464 appearances and contributed to over 20 major trophies, including four European Cups, announced his retirement following this year’s European Championship, to be held in his homeland.
Emotions ran high as Kroos, flanked by teammates donning his iconic number eight jersey, walked onto the pitch amidst a corridor of admiration.
A colossal flag bearing his likeness and the words “Thank you, legend” adorned the south stand, held aloft by adoring fans.
In the 85th minute, Kroos was overcome with emotion as he embraced his tearful children on the sidelines, prompting a pause in play.
Substituted shortly after to another standing ovation, he shared heartfelt moments with teammates and coach alike.
As the final whistle blew, Kroos, accompanied by his family and fellow players, embarked on a lap of honor, with supporters serenading him for nearly half an hour.
Expressing his gratitude, Kroos remarked, “I can only say thank you to all of Madridismo, to the club, my teammates, and this stadium. These 10 years have been unforgettable. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Reflecting on his emotional breakdown, he added, “I held up until I saw my children; that moment truly moved me.”
