Argentina is just one victory away from achieving a historic treble as they prepare to face either Colombia or Uruguay in the Copa America final on Sunday.
This follows their 2-0 semifinal triumph over Canada in East Rutherford, N.J.
A win in the final at Miami Gardens, Fla., would crown an extraordinary period for La Albiceleste, who previously captured the 2021 Copa America championship and the 2022 World Cup.
Lionel Messi scored his first goal of the tournament in the semifinal and emphasized the significance of the team’s accomplishments.
“It is crazy what this group has done, what the Argentine national team has been doing,” Messi stated.
“After this, much more importance will be given to all the finals that I played and to all the players of the old generation. It is a difficult Copa, very hard, with a heavy temperature. The fact that we are once again in a final is to be highlighted.”
Argentina will be looking to make history in the final.
If they win, they’ll become the first South American team to win a treble, a feat similar to Spain’s run from 2008 to 2012 when they won two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, however, remains focused on the immediate goal. “The most important thing is to win, not what the statistics say that we could win three finals in a row,” said Scaloni.
Canada showed resilience throughout the tournament. Led by Jesse Marsch, the team exceeded expectations by advancing past the group stage in their first Copa America appearance.
Canada will now play in the third-place match on Saturday against the loser of the Colombia-Uruguay semifinal.
