Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim defended his decision to leave Marcus Rashford on the bench during the team’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
Rashford, who had not started since December 12, was named among the substitutes but did not feature in the match, even as United trailed 2-0.
Amorim explained that his priority was to win the game, not to make a statement about Rashford. “I think about the team,” said the manager. “You think a lot about Marcus. I think about the team. When I’m there I’m not making a point. I just want to win the game.
“And you can feel it, I’m talking about the idea and the fight for relegation. Do I want to make a point during a game? No, I just want to win the game.”
Before the match, Amorim had suggested that Rashford’s return was due to the suspensions of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
Rashford’s role in the squad had been uncertain in recent weeks, and rumors have linked him with a potential departure.
He recently expressed his readiness for a new challenge noting that any departure would come without bitterness, emphasizing, “When I leave it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’… I’m not going to make it worse.”
When asked if he would ‘always be a red’, he said: “Yes! 100 per cent. 100 per cent.”
