On Sunday evening, Manchester United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Fulham in the Premier League, with Lisandro Martinez scoring his second goal of the season.
The Argentine defender’s shot took a fortunate deflection off Sasa Lukic, leaving goalkeeper Bernd Leno with no chance as it found the back of the net with just 12 minutes remaining in the match.
While Martinez’s goal was crucial, it was his celebration that captured the most attention.
After his previous goal at Anfield, the 27-year-old made hand gestures resembling slicing or cutting, which some fans linked to the Kenyan dance “mapangale” and his nickname, “The Butcher.”
However, the true meaning behind the celebration has now been revealed.
According to reports, Martinez was performing a traditional Argentine dance known as Tuko, popularized by Cuarteto musician La Mona Jiménez.
Though Martinez has yet to comment on his celebration, it seems to be a nod to his Argentine roots.
He has been in strong form recently, and United will be hoping he continues to shine as they aim to challenge for European qualification.
The Red Devils have a busy week ahead, with a midweek away trip to Steaua Bucharest followed by a Premier League home match against Crystal Palace next Sunday.
