The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will release the results of 379,000 candidates who sat for the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. The resit follows a series of errors during the initial exams, which led to significant performance issues in certain states, particularly Lagos and the South-East zone.

According to a report by The Punch, JAMB acknowledged technical and human errors that impacted the performance of candidates in Lagos and the South-East, where 206,610 candidates in 65 centers and 173,387 candidates in 92 centers, respectively, were affected. These candidates were asked to resit the exam after JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, publicly accepted responsibility for the failures.

“JAMB’s knee-jerk, fire-brigade approach has been anything but adequate,” said the South-East Caucus in the House of Representatives, calling for immediate changes in the exam’s administration.

Over 1.9 million candidates sat for the 2025 UTME, but the results raised concerns about the fairness and credibility of the process. More than 75% of candidates scored below 200 marks, a threshold considered critical for many institutions. These mass failures sparked debates about the integrity of the examination process.

The resit, which has been a cause of significant public outcry, follows JAMB’s investigation into the glitches. While JAMB made efforts to address the concerns by rescheduling the exams, the South-East lawmakers criticized the lack of communication, the short notice given for the rescheduled exams, and scheduling conflicts with ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WAEC).

JAMB’s handling of the 2025 UTME has faced increasing scrutiny, with the South-East lawmakers demanding a cancellation of the exams and a fresh exam date, preferably after the ongoing WAEC and NECO exams.

In response to the controversy, the Board is set to release the results of the affected candidates on Wednesday, and stakeholders are awaiting the outcome with mixed expectations.
