A taxi driver was killed in broad daylight during a violent cult clash in Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt, on Sunday. The shootout between rival gangs sent traders and residents fleeing in panic.
According to The Guardian Nigeria, the deceased was caught in the crossfire between Blood Star and D12 factions of the Deygbam cult groups. The gunfire erupted around 1:00 p.m. along Illabouchi, Mile 2 Diobu, disrupting commercial activities.
Eyewitnesses said the cult members exchanged gunfire openly, robbing pedestrians and shop owners while chaos unfolded. “It was terrifying — they just started shooting, and everyone ran for their lives,” a shop owner recounted.
The body of the taxi driver, whose name is yet to be confirmed, was retrieved by police operatives from the Azikiwe Police Division. Authorities later moved his remains to the station.
Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police Command spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko said:
“We have launched an investigation into the shooting, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects.”
The clash highlights the growing concern over cult-related violence in Port Harcourt, particularly in densely populated areas like Diobu. Security agencies have increased patrols in an effort to prevent further unrest.
