Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending his association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move was confirmed during a ceremony held at the Government House in Uyo on Friday, June 6, 2025.
NaijNaira learnt the defection ceremony drew top APC politicians from around the country, indicating the strategic weight of Eno’s switch. The governor’s decision comes as a surprise in a state long considered a stronghold of the PDP.
“We’re not joining the APC from a position of weakness, but from a position of strength. We’re bringing value to Akwa Ibom State,” Governor Eno stated during the event.
In his speech, Eno noted that his decision followed a period of consultation with political stakeholders across the state. He emphasized a focus on reconciliation and growth as his administration transitions under the APC.
Dignitaries at the event included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Cross River’s Bassey Otu, and Edo’s Monday Okpebholo. Also present was Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President.
Governor Eno’s move is especially notable considering his 2023 victory under the PDP, during which he was widely seen as a protégé of former governor Udom Emmanuel. His shift to the ruling APC marks a major moment in Akwa Ibom politics and signals a broader political realignment in Nigeria.
Following his defection, the number of states currently governed by the PDP has decreased to ten—Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba, and Zamfara. This boosts the APC’s dominance on the national map and strengthens its strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
