Cardiff City squad overhaul, Jamilu Collins injury, Cardiff City release players

Cardiff City have confirmed the release of Nigerian defender Jamilu Collins, Aaron Ramsey, and Anwar El Ghazi as the club prepares for life in League One. The Bluebirds’ summer retain list shows a major squad overhaul following their relegation from the EFL Championship.

Jamilu Collins, a 30-cap Super Eagles defender, joined Cardiff from SC Paderborn in 2022. However, his time in Wales was marred by injuries.

According to the BBC, Collins faced long spells on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament injury shortly after his arrival. Although he returned to action the following season, another setback ruled him out for two more months, costing him his place in the squad.

Collins managed to play 36 matches during the 2023/2024 EFL Championship season, scoring three goals and providing four assists. Despite his efforts, Cardiff struggled throughout the campaign and ultimately finished last. The club’s coach confirmed attempts to move Collins during the winter transfer window.

Aaron Ramsey, who briefly served as Cardiff’s interim manager, is also leaving. The former Arsenal midfielder is expected to continue his career with Mexican side Universidad Nacional, commonly known as Pumas UNAM.

Alongside Collins and Ramsey, Cardiff City have announced the departure of Raheem Conte, Anwar El Ghazi, Kieron Evans, Dimitrios Goutas, and Yakou Meite. All seven players will officially leave when their contracts expire on June 30.

“We’ve had to make some tough decisions to reset the squad ahead of next season,” a club source stated.
