Hannover 96 have completed the signing of South Africa’s Ime Okon, who is eligible to represent Nigeria, on a four-year contract from Supersport United, NaijNaira can report.
The 21-year-old defender had previously trialed with clubs like FC Midtjylland and Dynamo Kyiv before sealing his move to Germany. Okon became a free agent after his contract with Supersport ended, making him a key target for Die Roten.
Okon expressed his joy at joining the German side, saying, “I’m very happy to be signing with Hannover 96. I’m very excited about this challenge of being able to play in Germany.”
He added, “I’m looking forward to becoming a better player and maturing as a person.”
Hannover’s Managing Director, Marcus Mann, praised Okon’s talent and potential. “Ime is a player with exciting potential and very good physical attributes,” he said.
He added, “We collected data on him, and his athletic profile is exceptional. He’s eager to learn and we believe he’ll develop very well.”
Okon is known for his speed and strength on the pitch. “I’d describe myself as a fast, robust defender,” he said. “I’ll bring these strengths to the team.”
Though born in South Africa to a Nigerian father, Okon has chosen to represent Bafana Bafana internationally.
“I’m pretty much South African, but I’m also proudly Nigerian,” he said. “Playing for Bafana has always been a dream.”
He recently made his debut for South Africa in the 2025 COSAFA Cup.
