The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has died at the age of 90, barely a year after ascending the ancient throne, NaijNaira can report.
According to Tribune Online, the monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after marking his 90th birthday.
He became the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, when Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, officially presented him with the staff of office.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s brief reign followed the death of Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun, who passed on at 81 in March 2024.
He climbed the traditional ladder through the Balogun line before taking over as Olubadan of Ibadanland.
His journey to the throne reflected the city’s age-long succession system that rewards loyalty, patience, and seniority among chiefs.
“His Majesty carried the weight of tradition with calm strength,” a palace source said.
The palace has yet to issue an official statement, but traditional rites are expected to begin immediately.
Oba Olakulehin’s reign may have been short, but many Ibadan residents remember him as a quiet force who led with wisdom.
The city will now await the next senior chief in line as the Olubadan succession system prepares for its next chapter.
Updates from the Ibadan Traditional Council are expected soon regarding burial plans and the selection of a new Olubadan.
