The Super Falcons battled their way to a narrow 1-0 win over Botswana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a result that confirmed their spot in the quarterfinals, NaijNaira can report.
In his post-match comments, head coach Justin Madugu acknowledged the stiff challenge from Botswana. “It was a tough and highly competitive game,” Madugu said. “The Botswana girls were very spirited and determined. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”
Madugu noted that the team will rotate players for the final group match against Algeria. “We’ll definitely make some changes in the last game,” he said. “Not because we’re fielding a weaker team — all our players are capable — but because we need to manage the squad carefully.”
He emphasized the need to stay sharp throughout the tournament. “Even if we score 10 goals, there will still be things to improve,” he added.
Midfielder Deborah Abiodun will miss the Algeria clash due to suspension. “That gives others a chance to step in and show what they can do,” Madugu said.
Asked about the officiating, he responded, “It’s not for us to judge the referees… you just have to live with it and continue playing.”
