Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London at the age of 82, NaijNaira can report. His passing was confirmed this afternoon, July 13, by his family through a statement signed by Garba Shehu, his former media adviser.
According to the BBC, Buhari died in a clinic in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving care. “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un,” the statement began, announcing his death and offering prayers for his eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
Buhari, born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, first led Nigeria as a military ruler between 1983 and 1985. He later returned to power in 2015 through democratic elections, completing two presidential terms by 2023.
He built his political image around anti-corruption, security reforms, and public infrastructure. His time in office drew both praise and criticism, particularly on economic management and civil liberties.
Tributes have started to come in from political leaders, international figures, and citizens who described him as “a symbol of national discipline” and “a man who always stood by his convictions.”
His family has not yet released details about funeral arrangements.
