Femi Adesina says former President Muhammadu Buhari might not have lived this long if he had relied on Nigeria’s hospitals for treatment, NaijNaira can report.
Adesina made the statement while speaking on Channels Television, addressing the funeral of the late president, who died on Sunday at age 82 in a London hospital. Buhari had always chosen medical care in the UK—long before becoming president in 2015.
“If he had said I’d do my medicals in Nigeria just for show off or something, he could have long been dead,” Adesina said.
He explained that the former leader’s preference for London wasn’t about power or optics, but survival, pointing out that local expertise might have failed to manage Buhari’s condition.
“He always had his medicals in London even when he was not in office,” Adesina added.
Buhari’s body returned to Nigeria on Tuesday, July 15, for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The federal government declared the day a public holiday and ordered flags at half-mast.
Critics argue that Buhari missed the chance to improve local healthcare during his time in office.
Adesina responded, “You have to be alive first to get certain things corrected in your country.”
