African Union Orders Niger's Military Junta to Step Down within 15 days

The African Union (AU) has issued a directive to the military junta in Niger, ordering them to relinquish power and restore constitutional authority within a 15-day period.

The junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, staged a coup and detained President Mohamed Bazoum.

The AU’s Peace and Security Council has demanded the immediate and unconditional return of military personnel to their barracks.

International pressure has been mounting on the coup leaders, with the European Union suspending financial support and cooperation on security with Niger, and the United States pledging its support for the restoration of constitutional order.

The UN Security Council has also condemned the unconstitutional change of power and called for the release of President Bazoum.
