Chelsea FC Women have secured a major backer as Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband of Serena Williams, acquires an 8% ownership stake, driving the club’s valuation to £245 million.
According to Mail Sport, the American investor announced his involvement via LinkedIn, stating: “These players are rewriting the game. Undefeated season. Eyes on the treble. But this isn’t just about winning titles. It’s about finally matching their talent with the resources, visibility, and respect they deserve.”
The pre-money valuation was estimated at £225 million, with Ohanian’s investment pushing it to £245 million. He will also take on a role as a board member of the club, working alongside club president Aki Mandhar.
Champion Status and FA Cup Ambitions
Chelsea Women are currently enjoying a remarkable season. They’ve clinched their sixth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) title, added the League Cup to their collection, and are preparing for the FA Cup final against Manchester United this Sunday. Victory would secure a domestic treble.
Ohanian’s presence at Wembley for the final is expected, showing visible support for the team. His announcement also included personalized Chelsea kits with the names of his children, Olympia and Adira, symbolizing the family’s support.
Long-Term Vision for Women’s Football
This isn’t Ohanian’s first step into women’s sports. He was previously the largest stakeholder in Angel City FC, a team that sold for £192.3 million, setting a new benchmark in women’s club sports valuations.
By joining Chelsea Women, Ohanian aims to grow global interest, especially among American audiences, while improving commercial potential and fan engagement. His investment is expected to bring fresh momentum as the WSL looks to expand its reach.
