Former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed disappointment over the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He accused President Bola Tinubu of breaching the constitution by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Amaechi described the National Assembly as a weak institution that played a role in supporting an illegal government. He emphasized that the president’s actions were not only unconstitutional but also undermined the sanctity of the country’s constitution.

“Good governance is about constitutionality and the rule of law,” Amaechi stated during the 9th Edition of Akinjide Adeosun Foundation Annual Leadership Discourse in Lagos. According to The Nation newspaper, he criticized the president’s unilateral actions and stressed that they reflect a disregard for the country’s fundamental legal framework.

The former minister of transportation argued that a leader’s actions should align with the constitution, as it is the ultimate guiding document of the country. He went on to say that the current government is ruling based on the whims and desires of a single leader rather than following established laws.

Amaechi also pointed out that weak institutions like the National Assembly contributed to this breakdown in governance. He warned Nigerians that passive acceptance of poor leadership enables bad governance, highlighting the importance of holding leaders accountable.

Jimi Agbaje, the 2015 governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, also spoke at the event, calling for a better environment to nurture fearless leaders. He explained that fear of reprisal often discourages truth-telling, which in turn prevents leaders from making bold decisions for the country’s progress.
