A penalty incident during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park sparked intense debate.
United had come back from a two-goal deficit, were initially facing defeat after Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure’s first-half goals.
However, Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte equalized in the second half.
In injury time, referee Andy Madley awarded a penalty to Everton for a foul on Ashley Young in the United box.
But after reviewing the decision on the pitch-side monitor, VAR advised Madley to reverse his call.
Replays showed Matthijs De Ligt pulling Young’s shirt and Harry Maguire also appearing to make contact, but Madley overturned the penalty, frustrating Everton players and fans.
Ruben Amorim, commenting post-match, described the contact as “soft,” questioning whether it warranted a penalty.
On the other hand, Rio Ferdinand, while working as a pundit, acknowledged that Young likely exaggerated the fall but still felt minimal contact was present.
He was surprised by the reversal, stating that referees usually only change their decisions for “clear and obvious errors.”
Ferdinand also criticized Maguire’s performance, particularly his failure to track back on a key Everton chance.
The Premier League later issued their official statement, and the match resumed with a drop ball after the review.
