Diket Plang of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the Plateau State Central Senatorial District election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Plang emerged victorious with a total vote of 131,129, while Yohanna Gotom of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came in second with 127,022 votes. Garba Pwul of the Labour Party secured the third position with 36,510 votes.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Jima Lar, made the announcement after the supplementary election in Pankshin, the headquarters of the Plateau Central Senatorial zone.

Lar confirmed that Plang satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest votes in the election, making him the winner of the senatorial district.

The APC candidate’s victory comes after a keenly contested election, with the PDP’s Gotom as his closest challenger. Gotom secured a total of 127,022 votes, losing to Plang with a slim margin of 4,107 votes.

With the declaration of the Plateau State Central Senatorial District election, the APC has extended its dominance in the state’s political scene.

The party had earlier won the Yobe South Senatorial District election, with Ibrahim Bomai emerging as the winner. Bomai defeated his closest opponent, Halilu Mazagane of the PDP, with a slim margin of 711 votes.

The victories of the APC candidates in both senatorial districts have been greeted with mixed reactions from the electorate.

While some have hailed the outcome as a reflection of the people’s mandate, others have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the election was marred by irregularities.

However, INEC had earlier assured the electorate of its commitment to conducting a free, fair and credible election, and has been commended for living up to its promise.
