The chairperson of the Federal University of Technology, Minna chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Gbolahan Bolarin, has criticized the student loan bill signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.
Prof Bolarin argued that the law is not feasible for Nigeria as the country’s peculiarities were not considered before its enactment.
He expressed concern that the high unemployment rate among graduates and the abysmal minimum wage may make it difficult for students to repay the loan.
ASUU had opposed the bill from the beginning, citing its lack of sustainability.
The legislation provides for the establishment of the Nigerian education bank, which will administer, supervise, coordinate, and monitor the management of student loans in the country.
