Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is preparing to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okowa, who was Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, made this known during an interview on ARISE News.
According to Naija News, Okowa recently completed his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal issues within the PDP as one of the reasons behind his move. He also claimed that Atiku had been informed and involved in the discussions before his own defection.
The former governor expressed concerns over the future of the opposition party and the effectiveness of Atiku’s coalition efforts, describing the plans as lacking direction and urgency. “It does not seem that a viable vehicle for a coalition has been confirmed,” Okowa said.
Speaking on the upcoming 2027 elections, Okowa openly backed President Bola Tinubu for a second term. He stated that allowing Tinubu to complete eight years would maintain balance in the country’s rotation of power.
Okowa emphasized that his decision to switch parties was not personal but based on extensive consultation with political and community leaders in Delta State. He stressed that many felt they had been unable to benefit from federal support while in the PDP.
He concluded by saying the move was aimed at better serving the interests of the people in the state and ensuring broader political relevance.
