Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has alleged a “game plan” to subvert the democratic will of the people of Adamawa State in northern Nigeria.
Abubakar made the allegations in a press release issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday.
The statement comes in the wake of the declaration by Hudu Yunusa, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, of Aisha Dahiru as the winner of the gubernatorial election held in the state on Saturday.
The election, which was a supplementary poll, had been suspended by the electoral body following non-adherence to election guidelines and process.
Abubakar claimed that the voided election, in which Binani was declared the winner, has become a “case study of the shambolic nature of the 2023 elections in general.”
He further stated that the people of Adamawa State would not allow themselves to be cheated for the third time, and that both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and those vested with state powers should be held responsible for any consequences that may arise from their actions.
The former Vice President also demanded that the Adamawa REC and other parties involved in the voided declaration, which he described as a “treasonable act,” be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to anti-democratic forces.
