Atiku Slams Tinubu, Demands Emergency on Presidency

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency—not in any region, but on his own administration.

In a statement released Wednesday, according to a report by Daniel Daniel via X on April 17, 2025, Atiku criticized the president for what he described as neglect of leadership amid deepening crises across Nigeria.

Atiku’s call came as Tinubu remained in France on what the presidency described as a “working visit.” However, Atiku dismissed the trip as unnecessary and out of touch with Nigeria’s pressing needs.

He expressed frustration at the president’s absence, especially during a time of heightened violence and growing poverty. He pointed to renewed attacks in Plateau and Benue states and the resurgence of Boko Haram activity in the northeast.

“Plateau has turned into a killing field — over 100 lives lost in relentless attacks. Benue is bleeding. Boko Haram is seizing territory. And every single day, Nigerians sink deeper into poverty, insecurity, and despair,” Atiku said.

He accused the president of prioritizing international engagements over the well-being of Nigerians. Atiku questioned how a country battling such severe internal crises could afford to fund what he described as “vanity trips.”

According to him, Tinubu has already spent 59 days in France since assuming office, time that could have been used to address urgent challenges within the country.

He labeled the ongoing foreign travel as a “dereliction of duty on a catastrophic scale,” urging Tinubu to return and take charge.

“If Tinubu had even a shred of empathy, he would cut his trip short and return immediately,” Atiku declared.

He also criticized Tinubu’s political response to domestic unrest, saying it lacked sincerity and focus. Instead of declaring emergencies in specific regions for political benefit, Atiku said the president should acknowledge the broader national breakdown.

He concluded by asking a sharp question: “So when, exactly, will Tinubu declare a state of emergency on his own disastrous presidency?”
