The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party for a period of six months.
The suspension is due to alleged anti-party activities. The BoT accused Kwankwaso of engaging with President Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate), and Mr. Peter Obi (the presidential candidate of the Labour Party) without the board’s authorization.
This decision by the BoT follows the earlier suspension of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary, Agbo Major, by the NWC.
The BoT stated that the NWC’s suspension of Aniebonam and Major was a violation of the party’s constitution. The BoT has appointed new national officers to fill the vacant positions.
Additionally, the BoT declared that the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Kwankwasia Movement,
The National Movement (TNM), and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) is now void due to the actions of the NWC.
The BoT announced these decisions after a special meeting held in Lagos. The BoT’s Secretary, Muhammed Abdulahi, stated that Kwankwaso’s involvement in anti-party activities and unauthorized political discussions with other candidates led to his suspension.
The BoT emphasized that the violation of the MoU has resulted in the withdrawal of the partnership.
The new acting chairman of the NNPP, Dr. Agbo Major, expressed his commitment to healing the divisions caused by the suspended NWC members and stated that the party will remain people-oriented and open to all members.
