In a highly anticipated development, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled judgement for March 3rd regarding a consolidated lawsuit filed by multiple governors against President Muhammadu Buhari’s government over their plans to redesign the nation’s currency.
Over a dozen states have challenged the sudden implementation of the new notes and an injunction was issued by the Court to keep old notes in circulation until a final ruling is made.
The hearing today centered on whether contempt charges would be brought against Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, who had yet to implement prior court orders against the transition.
Alongside this, plaintiffs argued that such drastic changes could adversely impact citizens as banks were already struggling to provide new N500 and N1,000 notes needed for everyday purchases.
A decision will be reached after February 25th’s Presidential election.
