Chelsea is close to signing Nigerian left-footed centre-back Bright Ede from Polish club Motor Lublin, according to several Polish reports including Meczyki. The Premier League side could break the Ekstraklasa transfer record with a fee expected to top 11 million euros.
Discussions reportedly took place during Chelsea’s recent visit to Wroclaw for the UEFA Conference League final, where representatives from both clubs met privately. The London club wants to complete the deal quickly amid interest from other European teams, especially Arsenal.
Arsenal scouts closely monitored Ede in action during Motor Lublin’s 3-2 win over Radomiak Radom on May 24. The 18-year-old defender has only made six appearances in Poland’s top league but has caught attention with his left-footed ability and potential.
Motor Lublin secured Ede last year for just €100,000 after negotiations with his former club, Zaglebie Lubin, ended without a contract renewal. Though still early in his career, Ede has shown promise and has represented Poland’s U18 national team twice.
Bright Ede also follows Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, on social media, hinting at his strong connection to his Nigerian heritage. His move to Chelsea could mark the beginning of a significant career in one of Europe’s top leagues.
“Chelsea are eager to finalize the deal swiftly as they are aware that Ede is attracting interest from clubs across Europe’s top five leagues, including London rivals Arsenal.”
