Burna Boy warns artists about fake social media fan support

Multi-award-winning artist Burna Boy has issued a word of caution to fellow Nigerian musicians regarding the influence of social media fandom.

According to The Nation, the singer took to Instagram to express his concerns about overvaluing online popularity, especially from Nigerian fans on platforms like Twitter.

“Dear artists, Don’t let Twitter polls and ‘Naija social media fans’ deceive you. They won’t fill up any stadium for you in any part of the world,” he wrote.

He emphasized the vast difference in streaming revenue across countries.

One million streams from Nigeria, he noted, yield only $300 to $400.

By comparison, UK streams of the same volume generate around £3000 to £4000.

In the United States, artists earn approximately $3000 to $4000 from a million streams.

European streams also offer higher revenue, averaging €3000 to €4000 for the same amount.

Rather than celebrating top rankings on Nigerian streaming platforms, he believes artists should shift focus.

He encouraged them to aim higher or explore other business opportunities.

Burna Boy concluded his post with, “I type with love. #NoSignOfWeakness.”
