Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has received the Central Bank Governor of the Year award at the 2025 African Banker Awards Gala.
According to a statement published by the CBN, the event held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, brought together top finance ministers, central bank leaders, and banking executives from across the continent.
Cardoso was recognised for his role in driving Nigeria’s financial reforms, which have improved naira stability and increased investor confidence. The award, presented by African Banker magazine, applauds his leadership in implementing major monetary and regulatory policy shifts.
“These efforts have laid the groundwork for long-term macroeconomic resilience and renewed investor confidence,” the Awards Committee stated.
Organisers praised Cardoso for his “bold and strategic” actions, including measures that curbed exchange rate volatility and promoted transparency within Nigeria’s financial system.
Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, Adviser to the Governor on Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Communication, received the award on his behalf. She was joined on stage by Dr. Victor Oboh, Director of the Monetary Policy Department; Dr. Olubukola Akinwumi, Director of the Banking Supervision Department; and Dr. Aloysius Uche Ordu of the Monetary Policy Committee.
Event organisers noted that the award reflects the Central Bank’s efforts to tackle long-standing issues in the financial sector while positioning Nigeria for more sustainable economic management.
The ceremony attracted a wide spectrum of key industry players, including central bank governors, CEOs of development and commercial banks, and senior government representatives.
