The priest, who served at St. Charles Catholic Church in Nsukka Diocese, was attacked along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu road by assailants on a motorcycle.
According to the Diocese of Nsukka’s Facebook statement, Chancellor Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi said: “With crushing pain and sorrow, yet a firm hope in the resurrection, we announce the tragic death of our brother, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya. He was shot dead yesterday, 19 September 2025.”
Security concerns have escalated in Nigeria as thousands of Christian civilians have been killed since 2000, with Open Doors ranking Nigeria the most dangerous place for Christians in 2024.
Just days before this killing, Fulani herdsmen attacked Plateau State, leaving six Christians dead, fueling fears over worsening sectarian violence.
Human rights activist Emeka Umeagbalasi of Intersociety alleged Fulani militias receive both government and foreign jihadist backing to carry out attacks.
The Enugu State government has offered a ₦10 million reward for credible information leading to the arrest of Fr. Eya’s killers.
