Chelsea owners drop Abramovich rule for Potter's sake

Roman Abramovich’s reign of ownership of Chelsea was characterized mainly in its requirement for managers to finish a season within the top four to keep their job.

Roberto Di Matteo and Antonio Conte were among the few not to hold this standard.

The new owners, comprising of Bruce Boehly, Behdad Egbahali and Jose Feliciano, have moved away from the strict top-four ruling.

Now they are fully backing Graham Potter, despite Chelsea’s current standing at tenth place in the table.

This is reported to be an attempt to bring in “long-term cultural change” at Stamford Bridge, having brought in several young players in Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos with more set to come.

They also have reduced their policy of older defenders by having Cesar Azpilicueta, Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva as the only ones aged over 26 years old; goalkeeper Édouard Mendy being 29 years old is likely currently their eldest defender on the starting lineup.

Overall this has given Potter some breathing room and he’ll look forward to implementing his style at Chelsea as well as continuing long-term plans of cultural change by focusing on young players.
