Civil War in Nigeria, Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria unity

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has described the Civil War in Nigeria as the most difficult moment of his life.

Speaking in Abuja after receiving a LifeTime Integrity and Achievement Award at the 5th Convention of the Christian Men’s Fellowship, Abuja Anglican Diocese, Gowon said the decisions made during the war were guided by the goal of preserving Nigeria’s unity — not hatred, according to a report by Tribune Online.

Gowon explained that leading Nigeria during the conflict was a burden he did not choose, but one he accepted as necessary to prevent the country from breaking apart.

“I always remember the Civil War. It was the most difficult period of my life. It was not my choice, but I had to be there, and had to do what I did in order to keep this country together,” Gowon said.

“It was never a hatred against any people, I can assure you.”

Reflecting on the years after the war, Gowon shared that his actions have always been guided by prayer, humility, and a desire to serve with love and respect for all Nigerians.

He emphasized the message of reconciliation, urging citizens to forgive one another and pursue unity regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

Gowon praised the progress Nigeria has achieved since the war ended and called on all Nigerians to support ongoing efforts to maintain peace, harmony, and national cohesion.

At the event, former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by John-Kennedy Opara, congratulated the awardees for their public service and dedication to living with integrity.

“These men have touched lives, and God has used them in different ways to touch the nation,” Opara said, quoting Psalm 25:14 to encourage others to live righteously.

Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), also addressed the gathering. He urged Christian men to lead by example at home, in their workplaces, and within society at large.

The convention’s theme centered on truth, courage, and integrity, encouraging faith-based leadership in all areas of life.
