Darwin Núñez has spoken out after Uruguay’s dramatic 3-2 win over Colombia in World Cup qualifying.
The victory, secured by Manuel Ugarte’s stoppage-time goal, was vital for Uruguay’s campaign, ending a four-match winless streak.
The match saw tensions flare, particularly when Núñez, who had clashed with Yerry Mina towards the end, celebrated in the face of the former Everton defender, adding extra drama to the victory.
Uruguay’s head coach, Marcelo Bielsa, praised the win, calling it essential for restoring confidence. “It was a necessary victory,” Bielsa said. “We are heading in the right direction.”
The win lifted Uruguay to second in the South American qualifying table.
Núñez celebrated the triumph with a post on Instagram, which garnered over 200,000 likes.
He wrote, “Claw, football, egg and heart, this is the National Team. Thanks to those who always accompany us!”
The victory comes after criticism of Bielsa, particularly from former Uruguay captain Luis Suárez.
Suárez, who recently retired from international duty, accused Bielsa of creating division within the squad.
He claimed the coach’s behavior, including his refusal to engage with players, led some to contemplate quitting.
Suárez urged fans to not blame the players for Uruguay’s struggles and criticized Bielsa for undermining team unity.
