The federal government is reportedly considering raising the minimum wage to N200k per month, as demanded by organized labor in the country.
However, state governors are urging caution and a Technical Working Group (TWG) chaired by Anambra State governor Charles Soludo has been formed to resolve the issues surrounding the wage increase.
The matter was discussed at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, where the Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission presented a plan on how the federal government can meet the demand.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to be personally convinced that the demand is not unrealistic, citing his campaign promises as evidence.
The TWG, led by Soludo, has met multiple times to discuss the issue and negotiations with labor are expected to be conducted separately between the federal government and state governments.
The final decision on the national minimum wage will be made at the upcoming NEC meeting and will likely result in a significant increase for federal government workers, while the fate of state workers will be determined by the TWG.
