Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), had 18 bags filled with money and documents confiscated from his Lagos residence by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.
The bags, known as “Ghana-must-go” bags, were seized following a full day of property searching on Friday.
Emefiele has been in DSS custody for eight days and may have his time in custody extended as investigations into his conduct as head of the CBN continue.
The DSS has the authority to detain him for three weeks, but this period may be lengthened.
Emefiele was escorted from Abuja to Lagos for the search and then flown back to Abuja for questioning.
His personal assistant, who is reportedly connected to the discoveries made during the investigation, is currently missing and being pursued by authorities.
President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele and initiated an investigation on June 9, leading to his arrest by DSS.
